Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance for Ages 51 to 60: Real Rates & Best Companies
Yes, you can get covered in your 50s even after a decline. Guaranteed issue cost about $36.94 to $63.89 a month for $10,000 in our November 2026 quotes, but check a level or graded plan first.
Can you get life insurance between 51 and 60?
Yes. Between ages 51 and 60, four guaranteed issue companies we quote will accept you with no health questions and no exam. In November 2026, the cheapest $10,000 policy cost $44.28 a month for a 55-year-old woman and $56.49 for a 55-year-old man. Many people in this age range qualify for something cheaper, so that is where we start.
Your 50s are a common time to get turned down. A new diagnosis, a recent hospital stay, or a list of medications can stop a traditional application cold. The good news is that a decline from one company rarely means you are out of options.
This guide shows real guaranteed issue prices for every age from 51 to 60, how they compare with plans that ask a few health questions, and which companies came in cheapest. All prices are monthly, for a non-smoker, paid by bank draft.
Check these options before guaranteed issue
Guaranteed issue is the safety net, not the starting point. There are three tiers, and the first two cost less.
| Coverage type | Health questions | Medical exam | Waiting period | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level benefit (simplified issue) | A few yes/no questions | No | None. Full payout from day one | Most people, including many with controlled health conditions |
| Graded / modified benefit | Fewer or more lenient questions | No | Reduced payout for natural death, usually years 1-2 (varies by carrier) | People with a recent or serious condition |
| Guaranteed issue | None | No | About 2 years; premiums returned plus interest on early natural death | People who cannot qualify for anything else |
Here is what each tier cost for the same person in our quotes:
| Coverage type | Woman, 55 | Man, 55 | Woman, 60 | Man, 60 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level benefit (simplified issue) | $26.26 | $32.78 | $32.60 | $41.74 |
| Graded / modified benefit | $37.29 | $45.35 | $42.51 | $56.87 |
| Guaranteed issue | $44.28 | $56.49 | $51.06 | $63.89 |
A 55-year-old woman who qualifies for a level plan pays $26.26 instead of $44.28. That is about $216 a year less, and she is fully covered from the first day. Our simplified issue guide explains what those health questions usually ask.
Broker tip: Many people we talk to in their 50s were declined for a large term policy that required lab work. That is a very different test from a small final expense policy. A decline for $250,000 of term life often still leaves the door open to a level plan for $10,000 to $25,000.

How guaranteed issue works in your 50s
If you are within the company’s age range, you cannot be turned down. Your health history, medications, and past declines are never asked about.
- You pick a coverage amount. The smallest and largest amounts vary by company.
- Your price is locked in for life and never goes up.
- The policy builds a small cash value over time, like other whole life insurance.
- Coverage typically starts once the policy is issued and the first premium is paid.
The trade-off is the waiting period. If you pass away from natural causes in about the first two years, the company returns the premiums you paid plus interest instead of the full benefit. An accidental death is generally covered in full from the start. After the waiting period, the full benefit is paid for any cause.
Every company sets its own waiting-period terms. CICA Life, for example, returns premiums plus 10% in the first two years. Check the exact terms on your policy, or read our guaranteed issue overview for how the waiting period works.
How much coverage do you need?
Most people in their 50s buy guaranteed issue to cover a funeral and final bills. The National Funeral Directors Association put the median cost of a funeral with viewing and burial at about $8,300 in 2023, and about $6,280 with cremation. Neither figure includes a cemetery plot or headstone.
That is why $10,000 to $20,000 is the most common range we see. If money is tight, a smaller policy you can keep paying for life does more good than a larger one that lapses. If you need more than one company will issue, some people combine two small policies.
Best guaranteed issue companies for ages 51 to 60
The same coverage can cost very different amounts. For a 55-year-old man, the four companies ranged from $56.49 to $102.85 a month.
| Company | What stood out ages 51 to 60 |
|---|---|
| Gerber Life | Lowest price for women at every age from 51 to 60, and lowest for men at most ages. |
| Corebridge (AIG) | Second-lowest for women in our quotes. Often higher than CICA for men. |
| CICA Life | Price changes slowly with age. It was the cheapest choice for a 55-year-old man and sells guaranteed issue to younger ages than the others. |
| Royal Neighbors | Highest price in our quotes for this age range. |
The cheapest company changes with age and gender, which is why we compare all of them for each person. Gerber, Corebridge and Royal Neighbors started at age 50 in our quotes; CICA Life also quoted people younger than 50.
Common mistakes people make in their 50s
- Starting with guaranteed issue. In our quotes, guaranteed issue cost roughly 50% to 70% more than a level plan at these ages. Check the cheaper tiers first.
- Assuming one decline means every company will say no. Companies weigh conditions differently. One may decline you while another offers a level or graded plan.
- Guessing on health questions. If you apply for a level or graded plan, answer every question accurately. A wrong answer can lead to a denied claim.
- Buying more than you can afford to keep. A policy that lapses pays nothing. A slightly smaller policy you can keep for life is the better choice.
- Waiting too long. Prices rise with every birthday, and a new diagnosis can close the door on a cheaper plan.

Common questions about guaranteed issue for ages 51 to 60
Can I get life insurance at 55 if I was declined?
Yes. Guaranteed issue accepts you with no health questions. In our November 2026 quotes, $10,000 cost $44.28 a month for a 55-year-old woman and $56.49 for a man. A level or graded plan may also accept you for less, so it is worth checking first.
How much is guaranteed issue life insurance at 60?
For $10,000, the lowest guaranteed issue price we found at 60 was $51.06 a month for a woman and $63.89 for a man, for a non-smoker. A $20,000 policy started at $101.20 and $126.87.
Is there a waiting period on guaranteed issue in my 50s?
Yes. Most guaranteed issue policies have about a two-year waiting period. If you pass away from natural causes during that time, your beneficiary receives the premiums you paid plus interest. Accidental death is generally covered in full from the start.
Which company is cheapest for guaranteed issue at 51 to 60?
In our quotes, Gerber Life was cheapest for women at every age from 51 to 60 and for men at most ages. CICA Life was cheapest for a 55-year-old man. The cheapest company depends on your age and gender, so it pays to compare.
Is guaranteed issue worth it in my 50s?
It can be, if you truly cannot qualify for anything else. If you can answer a few health questions, a level (simplified issue) plan usually costs much less and pays in full from day one.
How much coverage can I get with guaranteed issue?
Limits vary by company. In our quotes, Gerber Life, Corebridge and CICA Life all offered $20,000 at ages 51 to 60. Some people combine two policies if they need more.
